Geological Society

While at Mitchell Conner Searson the Geological Society came to us with major corporate sponsorship from several of the biggest FTSE 100 companies – They wanted to do something very special online for their 2007 bicentenary – we embraced the idea.

The project was extremely ambitious covering all aspects of the society. For starters we built an extremely large content managed site with an online library catalogue covering tens of thousands of books and publications, this seamlessly integrated with a huge catalogue of scanned journals, all viewable online and over 50,000 maps – that’s where the clever stuff began…

Using a GIS mapping system covering the world we overlaid data from the maps and books in the physical library, allowing society fellows to find a location on the map – for example a region in Africa, then review all maps and publications within the library for that area - we do not believe this has ever been done before.

We added a member’s area that allowed personalisation of the site by its users, voting on society issues and a full directory of all society fellows. Smaller sub sites were built for special interest groups and regional offices to edit their own content.

E-Commerce and event booking functionality was built allowing the purchase of Geological Society publications and event tickets, including cross-selling of books related to events.
